We also saw the King Tut exhibit while at the Pacific Science Center. It was a fascinating journey through history and a wonderful chance to become acquainted with indoor dramatic lighting.

Favorite Photo of the Week: King Tut

With my love of nature and landscape photography I love (and sometimes despise :o) natural light. Other lighting sources are a mystery to me and not something I feel comfortable shooting with. Therefore when I went to the Pacific Science Center to see the King Tut exhibit and found out I could do some non-flash photography I didn't have very high expectations. There were many different types of lighting on the different items and a few of them were exactly what I expected, too low to get a quality image. Some of them, though, were perfectly lit. The one below is of the top of a canopic jar. I love the drama of the lighting and how it makes the topper glow. I did a minimum of editing, choosing to let the lighting speak for itself. 


While I am still a lover of natural lighting, I just might be more open to different lighting sources in the future :o).

Last week when I went to the Pacific Science Center and saw the King Tut exhibit, I also went into the butterfly house. Despite my love of butterflies, I am not a fan of the butterfly house. They tell you all these rules before you go in about how you have to be careful to not step on the butterflies, make sure they don't land on your bare skin and other things not to do as they can have various bad consequences on the butterflies. Therefore, I am always on alert as I don't want to hurt any of these beautiful creatures. This time I had butterflies land on me 3 times. After the 3rd time I had to leave just to be able to take a breather. Even with the anxiety I was able to capture a few pictures including the one below. I cropped and played with the basic settings to brighten the photo.

Favorite Photo of the Week: Contentment 1.8.12

I had more than one favorite photo this week, surprising I know ;o)! However, one was a sunset photo and one was the photo below. I decided to go with this photo of my dog niece Cece for a few reasons. One, it was not a sunset photo which are the ones I often go to for favorites...I wanted to go with something different. Two, the photo was an accomplishment for me. It is SOOC, it was indoor lighting, it was a subject that was not nature/landscapes/macro and it was taken with my new 50mm lens. All of these factors are accomplishments for me and are another step on my photography journal. Three, the theme for Darcy at my3boybarians Project 52 is "Made with Love." I think that dogs are exceptionally skilled at unconditional love and I have a feeling that love was encoded into their DNA, hence they are made with love :o). I hope to find a few moments this coming week where I can experience this kind of contentment. My wish is that you will too! Thank you for stopping by!

Good to Wow Edit: Lighting Up the Holiday 12.13.11

I go back and forth between enjoying this time of year and feeling the stress of it. I love the lights, the music and the joy. On the other hand, though, there is so much to do and so little time. I stress about the deadlines and the responsibilities. I am trying to remember that it always gets done every other year and I know it will this year too. I just have to concentrate on what I love about the holidays and take the time to enjoy it. Thank goodness for photography challenges and blogs! They continue to stretch me as a photographer and because so many of the prompts and themes are holiday related I don't need to look far to remember what it is that makes Christmas time so special. So, thank you to everyone who is helping me to keep my Christmas spirit! I am grateful for you :o).

Now for my edits for the Good to Wow Challenge - Bokeh Lights. I loved my SOOC shot so I stuck with a clean edit in Lightroom as I didn't want to stray too far. However, I was playing around with the Vibrancy and really liked the look of putting it all the way down...almost black and white with a hint of blue. So you get to see both, lucky huh :o)? Favorite Photo of the Week: Capitol Building Shadows 08.28.11

I had a hard time picking a photo as my favorite this week. I really loved all of my Capitol Building photos, especially my black and white edit from Wednesday and Thursday, but there was just something about this photo. I love the lighting and the pattern. This edit was also a feat as the SOOC lacked the color that I saw on location and I was thrilled when I accomplished it :o).

Capitol Building Entry 08.28.11

Here is another beautiful shot from inside the Washington State Capitol Building. The architecture is stunning and I learned that the light fixtures were all done by the Tiffany Company in New York City. My goal was to capture the intricate designs on the ceiling of the entryway. In post processing I worked with temperature, tint, contrast, saturation, vibrance and added a vignette.

Capitol Building Shadows 08.28.11

As I mentioned in yesterday's post I was able to spend some time at the Washington State Capitol Building in Olympia, WA. It is a beautiful building and we were able to explore the interior and I was able to photograph many of the architectural elements. I love exploring old buildings and historical sites. My favorite vacation was to Washington D.C. and the reasons I loved it are the same reasons I had such a great time at the Capitol Building - the beautiful building, the history and the historical significance. 

One of the things that struck my immediately when entering the building, beside the size of the rotunda, were the huge windows with light streaming in. The inside of the building is fairly dark and I unfortunately forgot my tripod, which I never do :o(. However, the windows had a ton of light and I loved how the sunlight made patterns on the walls. In post processing, I played with temperature, contrast and vibrance to bring out the shadows and the blue sky outside of the windows. The simplicity of the subject and the composition is what I wanted to convey with the photo and the edit.
