I missed Tones on Tuesday last week because I was attending my grandmother's funeral in Kentucky. I was blessed to get to have such an amazing grandmother and I was glad to be able to go back to be with my family during this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding. Both of my parents were born in Kentucky. My brother and I were born in Oregon and have lived most of our lives in Washington. So when we were back in Kentucky for the funeral, my mom showed my brother, his girlfriend and I around some of the places she spent time during her growing up. My mom's best friend's grandson also came with us. This shot is from Devou Park with the Cinncinati, Ohio skyline in the background. It was fun to see the places of my mom's memories and to capture part of my family. I did not bring my tripod so I had to make do with a bench. It was very windy so the photo was not as crisp as I would have liked. I used the Pioneer Woman's Lovely and Ethereal Action to play up the softness as an asset rather than a distraction. Hopefully it worked!

Wordless Wednesday: Seattle Skyline from Alki 3.3.12

Following my brother's birthday brunch the family headed to take some photos of Seattle from Alki across Puget Sound. The first shot is quintessential Seattle with the Space Needle and the ferry (and the cloudy skies :o). In the second the skyline continues. One of the things that I love most about living where I live is that within a short drive I can be near the water, in the mountains, downtown or at the beach. The variety is amazing and the perfect playground for a photographer!

I tried really hard to pick one photo to post as my favorite, but I felt compelled to pick two. In both cases, I felt really proud of the shots I was able to capture and the experience of these moments. I hope you don't mind the double favorites :o).

Do you ever have those months when you just can't get out from under everything? That has been February for me. But I have decided that instead of getting down about all of things I didn't do, I am going to start anew and continue my work toward my goals in the month of March. Therefore, I am not going to share any showcases this week. We will start fresh with the regular Tones on Tuesday format next week. For this week, I am going to share a picture and anxiously await your photos :o). Then I will get to do my favorite thing...visit your blogs and Flickr sites and be inspired by your talent! My photo is of a recent trip I took to try and de-stress a bit. On the way back from the coast we stopped in Portland, Oregon to take a picture of the city lights. This photo was taken at the end of the Eastbank Esplanade near OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). My goal was to capture the color and the lines. I competed with wind, cold and water that was anything but calm. I am happy with the result though and would love to go back in better conditions. In Lightroom, I cropped, straightened, adjusted many of the basic settings and used the tone curve a bit. What do you think?

Favorite Photo of the Week: Factoria Sunset & Gasworks Park

Late posting today as I had a book club meeting. After photography and travel, my next favorite activity is reading and talk about books. Needless to say I had a wonderful time. As for the photos, I had two and I just could not decide between the two. So I decided not too. I hope you don't mind :o).

Favorite #1 - Gasworks Park 10.08.11

The starbursts and framing are what I love the most and that I was able to get a night shot even with a lot of wind.

I Learned: Factoria Sunset 10.15.11

This week I learned that sometimes the most beautiful moments happen in the most unexpected places. On Saturday while driving around trying to find a place to photograph the sunset from, we pulled into a driveway to turn around. The driveway was to the Tmobile Complex in Factoria and it just seemed like there might be a spot to view the rapidly changing sky. After a few twists and turns and almost turning back, we reached the top building in the complex and were rewarded with one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen that was not at the beach or on the water. I did nothing to the sky in post processing and it is almost an exact match to what I saw. I did remove a few spots in the tree line with spot removal in Lightroom and do some noise removal. Then I used the healing brush in Photoshop for some spots on the buildings. Who would of thought that these colors and view (I think of Seattle) could be found at a corporate complex in the middle of the city? I wonder what other unexpected places I can find next :o)?
