This year I have been working on a Reverse 365 Project where I edit a photo a day taken in 2012. I love looking back on photos I took, but never had the chance to edit and share. I get ideas for new photos, learn more about editing and stretch my creativity. It also reminds me of amazing places and experiences. I have been editing a lot of sunset photos from last year and realized how long it has been since I have experienced and captured a sunset. Sunsets truly are food for my soul and leave me feeling peaceful, content and renewed. This weekend I rewarded myself for finishing report cards with a evening of shooting a sunset at Brown's Point between Des Moines and Tacoma, Washington. It was amazing watching the sun hit the water and descend below the clouds. My favorite natural event!

Reverse 365: April 2013 Wrap-Up

Number of Photos: 30
Locations: Illwaco, WA / Pacific Science Center / Seattle, WA / Commencement Bay, Tacoma, WA / Point Defiance Gardens / Oregon Coast / Sunset Lake / The Cove Normandy Park, WA / Wenatchee, WA / Lake Chelan, WA / Vancouver, WA / Washington Coast / Puyallup Fair / Louisa Boren Park, Seattle, WA / Issaquah, WA
Editing Techniques Used: Lightroom Tips
Tutorials Used: 10 Quick and Easy Lightroom Tricks

What I Learned: Lightroom is even more amazing than I knew it was! The tutorial I used above was filled with a bunch of tricks with features I hadn't used in Lightroom before. My favorites were stacking brushes and the luminance sliders. It opened my eyes to the potential that exists in the program. I can't wait to learn more uses for it as the year continues. I also discovered this month the power of RAW I was not taping into. I have shot RAW for a long time, but when I open them in Lightroom I usually leave the default settings the program puts on the photo. This month I started "zeroing" out the photos and it has allowed me so much more flexibility with my photos. I have been able to save some that I thought were not savable. It has really helped me in my present day editing as well.

Reverse 365: Open - Day 112/365 4.22.13

If I have to pick one, I must say that I prefer the Oregon Coast. There is something about the fact that the beaches are all public and maybe the fact that I was born in the state that has me going to the Oregon Coast whenever I can. With that being said, the Washington Coast is not a bad place to be either!

"Oregon is blessed with a coastline of scenic beauty and variety unmatched on this continent. It's a delightful place, where the Pacific surge washes and sometimes pounds the western edge of our continent. It's a land of storms and sunburns, of wharves and lighthouses, of salt air and fading paint. It's a perfect place for the human psyche to unwind, for workaday tensions to be washed away by the rhythmic cadence of the surf." - William L. Mainwaring

Reverse 365: Fire Mountain - Day 97/ 365 4.7.13

For the month of April I decided to focus on learning more about the features Lightroom that I have yet to try out. I found this great tutorial with ten tips. I used the luminance sliders for the sky on this photo. I love the end result.

Reverse 365: March 2013 Wrap-Up

Month #3 was a tough month. Illness and loss made this the first month where I did not post a picture a day. However, I am determined to continue to work toward my goal of completing this Reverse 365.

Number of photos: 31
Locations: Around my house / Driving around Washington / Mima Mounds, WA / Tolmie State Park, WA / Cannon Beach, OR / Fort Stevens State Park, OR / Portland, OR / Dosewallips State Park, WA / Quincy Wildlife Recreation Area, WA / Astoria, OR / Illwaco, WA
Edited Techniques Used: Histogram in Lightroom and Adding Drama in Photoshop
Tutorials Used: Histogram Info and Adding Drama Photoshop Tutorial

What I Learned: This month I learned that there are times when life presents obstacles and challenges that may deter you from accomplishing a goal. Unexpected and unwanted things will come and it really is all about how you handle the things in your path.

Reverse 365: Tradition Creation - Day 89/365 3.30.13

Two year ago my mom and I stumbled upon the Illwaco Fireworks show that is held at the port there each Saturday on or after the forth. There is a street fair and then everyone sprawls on the grass to await the main event - the fun and beautiful fireworks show. We have been two years in a row and I just love the atmosphere of a small town celebrating the Fourth. Here is the view while we waited for dark...

Project 52 - Week 10/52

Do you ever have an idea for a shoot that doesn't work out only to have what you do instead be better? That is what happened for me this weekend. In the past couple weeks a bunch of the local photographers I follow were doing shoots at the Pike Place Market. I was inspired and wanted to give it a try. However it was the first sunny day in a while and all of Seattle was out and about. We have to soak it up when we can! Parking was atrocious and frustrating so we had to regroup. We had some lunch and then I remembered wanting to go to the Olympic Sculpture Park a month or so ago. We headed in that direction and were blessed with a parking spot right next to the park. It is such a lovely place that mixes the natural beauty and the artwork gorgeously. The light was stunning and the shapes of the sculptures provided beautiful subjects for photos. The pieces below are the ones I was drawn to, but the park is filled with many others. You can read more about the artwork and the different environments that represent the environmental diversity of the state here. I didn't expect to enjoy the park as much as I did, but now I would love to go back and see more of the pieces. Pike Place Market is still on my list, but I feel like it was meant to not work out this time. The best laid plans...

Reverse 365: Reset Button - Day 65/365 3.6.13

I have decided on my editing focuses for the month of March. For Lightroom I am going to be working on becoming more familiar with the Histogram and using it to help improve my editing skills. I found this tutorial and have been using it as a starting point. In Photoshop I am working on adding drama with this simple tutorial. I have been toying around with the idea of having a link up at the end of the month for anyone who wants to try one or both of these tutorials and share what they learn. Would you be interested it that?

Location: Fort Stevens State Park in Hammond, Oregon (my favorite park!)
