Tones on Tuesday #40 07.31.12

Welcome back or welcome for the first time! I am happy you chose to stop by. Take a moment to check out the 3 showcases from last week and link up your photo. I can't wait to see what you have been shooting!

There is something about light shining through flower petals that feels magical and is simply beautiful. I love the softness of the black and white here and how it plays up the tiny details of the petals. Thank you for sharing this photo with us!

Jaymi at Live, Love, Travel
Each week I learn something new about photography from Jaymi and I am always inspired to give her tips a try. I love that she is so willing to share with us and I love this photo. It is shot in infared and is just so cool! The contrast, the texture and the drama make for a great photo. Thank you Jaymi!

This is a beautiful and serene sunset photo! The colors are stunning, the silhouette and reflection are lovely and the weathered dock in the front is wonderfully lit and adds so much character. Thank you for sharing Molly!

Last week when I went to the Pacific Science Center and saw the King Tut exhibit, I also went into the butterfly house. Despite my love of butterflies, I am not a fan of the butterfly house. They tell you all these rules before you go in about how you have to be careful to not step on the butterflies, make sure they don't land on your bare skin and other things not to do as they can have various bad consequences on the butterflies. Therefore, I am always on alert as I don't want to hurt any of these beautiful creatures. This time I had butterflies land on me 3 times. After the 3rd time I had to leave just to be able to take a breather. Even with the anxiety I was able to capture a few pictures including the one below. I cropped and played with the basic settings to brighten the photo.

Settings: ISO 100, 55mm, ss1/1, f/5.6

I spent yesterday at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. I used to go there all the time when I was younger on school field trips and with my family. Now I go on free educator days and with kids I know. One of the best things about the PSC is that they have a big exhibit that changes on a regular basis and is usually fabulous! The last one I went to was of tons of things from the Harry Potter movies. This time it was relics from King Tut's tomb. I love going to museums and learning about history. I always walk away knowing more and having a greater appreciation for the past as well as the present. What struck me about this exhibit was the beauty of the cravings and artifacts. I can't imagine the time and energy it took to make one of them, let alone the thousands found in King Tut's tomb. The lighting was dramatic and beautiful and made for some amazing, yet difficult shooting due to the low light. The photo below is the topper of a canopic jar that held one of the organs after the mummification process. This photo required very little editing and I love how the beauty seems to shine through.

Settings: ISO 400, 48mm, ss1/30, f/5.6

Tones on Tuesday #38 07.10.12

Welcome back or welcome for the first time! Thank you for sharing your amazing photos. Here are a few from last week that captured my attention...

I love the whimsy feel of this photo and the bright vibrant colors. It looks like the perfect summer day and an amazing family moment. Thank you for sharing!

I love the use of selective color here to emphasize the flags. It adds to the symbolism and patriotism of the photo. Thank you for linking up Candy!

The soft light is beautiful and the depth of field gives the sense of movement that has me imagining I am there listening to the grasses rustle in the wind. Thank you for sharing with us Molly!
