This weekend I had the opportunity to go to my favorite place, the beach! The sun was shining, but it was quite chilly with a bit of a wind. For me, though, any day at the beach is an amazing day no matter the weather. I decided to solely use my 50mm lens to become familiar with it and see what it could do for me in terms of sharpness. I definetly see a difference from my kit lens and along with back button focusing and other things I have been doing to achieve sharp photos, I am happy with the results. For the photo below I wanted to capture the solitude of the beach (only the die hards were out for any long period of time :o). I decided to go creative with the editing to change the hazy dull sky to something a bit more vibrant. Just basic settings to achieve this. I really like the stillness of this photo. 

Settings: ISO 100, 50mm, ss1/200, f/11

Tones on Tuesday #45 09.11.12

I cannot believe that 11 years ago this Tuesday I woke up to the news of the World Trade Center attacks and the images that could not possibly be real. I will take a moment to remember that day and all those whose lives were cut short. The day will pass and we will all go back to our lives, because I truly believe that is the best way to honor the memory of that fateful day.

I mentioned last week that I drove my brother to a wedding in Lake Chelan and had a brief opportunity to photograph the sun setting over the lake. For me, the feeling of this sunset was of a quiet drama with the dramatic colors and the stillness of the setting. I haven't been shooting much lately with the start of school and my 6th year of teaching. I have been reflecting on my photographic journey lately. I am a bit conflicted about the fact that I shoot so many sunsets. On the one hand sunsets are always an amazing experience for me. I feel at peace and connected to my faith and my self in a way that I don't often find in other moments. On the other hand I want to push myself and find other subjects to photograph to broaden my style. How do you push yourself, yet remain true to what you love to shoot?

A couple weekends ago I drove my brother to a wedding in Lake Chelan, which is about 3 hours from where I live. It was a long drive both ways, but along the way I had the opportunity to capture a few shots at a park and then the sun setting over the lake. This shot was taken in Wenatchee at a park where we stopped to stretch our legs and feed the dog who came along. I read somewhere that it is "easy" to get a shot at sunset. I must say I disagree. It might be easy to capture the colors, but to capture the feeling of the sunset can be very difficult. In this case I was trying to show the elegance of the sun beginning its descent. I am not sure I was successful, what do you think?

I Clicked It Up A Notch - August

The month of August has been a busy one! From celebrating and reflecting on the one year anniversary of my blog and shooting on manual to starting my sixth year of teaching, I have had less time get out and photograph than I would like. Despite less time shooting, this month has been filled with trying new things when I do get the chance to take photos. For my favorite photo of the month I chose one where I tried something new and learned from the experience. I was out at a local garden enjoying the scenery, but struggling with the direct sun lighting. In an attempt to use the light to my advantage I changed my perspective and captured the photo below. I learned that even when I feel disappointed, changing my perspective can change everything. (This works for my life too :o)
